University of Ibadan will admit only 350 candidates into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme for the 2026/2027 academic session, with candidates whose aggregate scores fall below 79.38% likely to face significant difficulty securing a place, findings by The Nigeria Education News have revealed.

The admission quota comprises 315 candidates through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) route and 35 candidates through Direct Entry (DE), figures that reflect the Institution's approved capacity for one of Nigeria's most sought after academic programmes.

The University has yet to officially announce its final admission cutoff mark for the session, though admission analysts note that the aggregate score required for Medicine consistently ranks among the highest across all programmes offered at the Institution.

Education experts disclosed that admission into MBBS is determined not only by UTME performance but also by Post UTME results, O'Level grades, approved quotas and other institutional requirements. Many candidates with strong academic records are consequently unable to gain admission because the number of qualified applicants far exceeds available capacity.

The situation at University of Ibadan reflects a wider national pattern, as demand for Medicine and Surgery places continues to outpace capacity across federal, state and private universities. Regulatory limits tied to teaching hospitals, laboratories, lecture facilities and qualified personnel restrict how far institutions can expand intake without corresponding investment in infrastructure and staffing.

Analysts advised candidates whose aggregate scores fall below the highly competitive range to realistically assess their prospects and consider alternative health related disciplines such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry or Microbiology, noting that these fields also offer rewarding careers within Nigeria's healthcare system.

Experts further recommended that prospective candidates monitor official updates from University of Ibadan directly rather than relying on unofficial projections circulating online, stressing that historical trends only guide expectations while the Institution's official process determines the final admission list.

University of Ibadan remains among Nigeria's leading centres for medical education, drawing some of the country's highest performing UTME candidates each cycle. With just 350 places on offer for 2026/2027, competition among applicants is set to remain fierce.
