Osun State University (UNIOSUN) is set to hold its maiden Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) induction ceremony on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium, UNIOSUN Main Campus, Osogbo, from 10am prompt.

The ceremony, themed "The Making Of A Physician: Excellence, Character And Service," will be hosted by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, on behalf of the University's Council, Senate and Congregation.

The event marks the graduation of the pioneer set of medical doctors produced since the MBBS programme was recommenced at UNIOSUN, following years of disruption that forced the University to relocate its earliest medical students abroad for training.

The MBBS programme was introduced at the inception of UNIOSUN in 2007 and received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission in May 2012. It was suspended during the 2012/2013 academic session after the University failed to meet Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria requirements for a dedicated teaching hospital, prompting the Osun State Government to sponsor the relocation of the pioneer medical students to V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in Ukraine to complete their training.

The programme was restored in 2018 following the foundation laying of a dedicated teaching hospital donated by the University's Chancellor, Apostle Dr Folorunso Alakija. UNIOSUN also inherited the former Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo in 2020, which was renamed UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, providing an immediate clinical training base for the returning programme.

The MBBS admission quota was later increased from 100 to 200 in February 2024, as approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, while the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital was commissioned in December 2025 to further strengthen clinical training capacity for medical students.

Wednesday's induction ceremony is expected to formally admit the pioneer graduating cohort into the medical profession, marking a significant milestone for the College of Health Sciences, which was established alongside the University in September 2007. UNIOSUN currently offers Medicine alongside other health related programmes including Anatomy, Physiology, Public Health and Nursing Science within the College, whose recent NUC accreditation exercise saw all 29 academic programmes presented by the University granted full accreditation status.
