The National Association of Nigerian Students has issued a 72 hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government and security agencies to rescue five abducted students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, arrest those responsible for the killing of a D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic student, and address worsening insecurity around tertiary institutions in the state.

NANS Secretary General, Oladimeji Uthman, popularly known as "Dan Fodio," announced the ultimatum on Wednesday at a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Abeokuta, with student union leaders from several Ogun State institutions in attendance.

The ultimatum follows a series of violent incidents targeting students. On 27 July, an HND II Marketing student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, identified as Ahmed Sekinat, was shot dead during a robbery attack in the Eruku community. A second student sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. On the night of 29 July 2026, five students were abducted from a private hostel in Ipara Remo, Remo North Local Government Area.

Uthman stated that students across the state now live under constant threat from kidnapping, armed robbery, cult violence and rape. He declared, "For far too long, students have continued to live in fear. The safety of lives and property on and around our campuses has been grossly threatened by armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, cult related violence and other criminal activities. Students can no longer move freely, attend lectures or return to their hostels without fear of attack."

The NANS scribe disclosed that earlier attempts to engage security agencies through formal meetings produced no results, alleging that written invitations sent to agency heads were ignored. He noted, "Regrettably, these requests were not honoured. This refusal to engage with the legitimate representatives of Nigerian students has frustrated genuine efforts aimed at finding collaborative solutions while students continue to suffer armed robbery attacks, kidnappings, violent assaults and loss of lives."

Uthman acknowledged the deployment of a police aircraft by Inspector General Olatunji Disu and Governor Dapo Abiodun as a positive step, whilst insisting that more decisive action remained necessary.

NANS further demanded increased campus patrols, permanent security posts in vulnerable student communities, deployment of the Ogun State Anti Violent Crime Team to institutions, and the creation of a joint security and student leaders forum. The association warned it would commence statewide protests if the demands were not met within the stipulated period.
