The Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Abiodun Adeniyi, has revealed that a request for a ₦5 million credit alert was among a string of personal financial demands he received after assuming leadership of the Abuja based private Institution.
Adeniyi disclosed the demands in a Facebook post on Thursday, stating that one person asked him to fund the completion of a house that had reached lintel level, claiming to have received a revelation that he was destined to finance it. Another person requested sponsorship for an overseas trip to mark a birthday, citing having never travelled abroad.
"Yet another sent a text and requested a credit alert of ₦5 million to meet some urgent needs," Adeniyi wrote, adding that one petitioner remained unmoved even after he explained his salary could not accommodate the request.
The Vice Chancellor linked the demands to wider economic and social conditions that push people to depend on relatives, friends and acquaintances perceived as financially comfortable, noting that unemployment, underemployment, weak social safety nets and poorly functioning institutions intensify the burden on those seen as privileged.
"The demands on individuals perceived as privileged multiply because of poorly managed systems, leading to unemployment, underemployment, inadequate social safety nets, and less responsive institutions," he stated.
He went further to link such pressure to corruption among political officeholders, suggesting the desire to satisfy accumulated demands could partly explain why some resort to illicit means. "This may be part of why a political office holder seeking goodwill might steal or seek loans, looking for funds to respond to the accumulated demands," he said.
Adeniyi assumed office as Vice Chancellor of Baze University on May 6, having previously served as Registrar of the Institution for more than a decade.
