Obafemi Awolowo University has unveiled the official logo and mascot for the 2026 West Africa Universities Games, with the institution declaring full readiness to host student athletes from across the sub region at its Ile Ife campus between 2 and 12 October 2026.

The mascot, named Orí Olókun, draws from deep Yorùbá cultural heritage. The name translates literally to "The Head of Olókun" and references a celebrated 14th century bronze and terracotta sculpture excavated in 1910 at the Olókun Grove in Ilé Ifẹ̀. The piece is distinguished by refined vertical facial scarifications that mirror the beaded veils historically worn by Yorùbá kings to signify divine authority.

The Director of Sports of the Great Ife Students' Union, Oginni Ayotomiwa, disclosed that 16 submissions were received following a public call, with three shortlisted for final selection. "The three were presented to the local organising committee, where Ori Olokun was later selected ahead of the other two, which were a bat and a tortoise, which do not really depict athleticism," he said. Ayotomiwa noted that a mascot for any competition must be rooted in the host community's tradition, adding that the unveiling officially marks the beginning of the journey to the Games.

On facilities and logistics, he stated: "If you check our sporting facilities, little by little they are being upgraded and all. Typically, we are ready." He identified funding as the central challenge, noting that the management and local organising committee are actively working to attract sponsors.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the Games as more than an institutional obligation. He said hosting WAUG 2026 constitutes a service to Nigeria and the wider West African sub region, pointing to the university's record in academic excellence, character development and sporting achievement as strong qualifications for the role.

Bamire stated that every logistics dimension is receiving attention, including facility upgrades, accommodation, transportation, healthcare, security and volunteer training.

"We are determined that WAUG 2026 will not simply be remembered as another sporting event. Our goal is to host a tournament that will become a benchmark for future editions in terms of organisation, hospitality, safety, fairness and excellence," he said.

The 2026 edition marks the 15th instalment of the Games, which were established in 1965 at the University of Ibadan.
