The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, announced that higher learning Institutions in Nigeria are prepared to lead coordinated regional action on climate literacy during an academic dialogue held on campus. The development coincided with the presentation of a new climate literacy toolkit produced by the Institute of Nigeria China Development Studies in partnership with the Pulitzer Centre Africa Impact Seed Fund, designed to embed environmental education across all undergraduate programmes under the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard.

The academic initiative established the South West Nigeria Climate Literacy Educators Network, drawing participating Universities from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti States into a unified regional effort. Addressing the participants, Professor Ogunsola stated that climate change represents a defining global challenge that demands cross disciplinary solutions spanning law, engineering, environmental sciences, and the arts.

Reinforcing the regional focus, the Director of the Institute of Nigeria-China Development Studies, Professor Olufemi Muibi Saibu, disclosed that curriculum adaptation must directly reflect local institutional needs rather than generic frameworks. He explained that Faculties of Law, Engineering, and Arts must internalise climate concepts uniquely to ensure that the educational tools are built, tested, and owned by the using Institutions.

Supporting the academic partnership, the Education Manager for Africa at the Pulitzer Centre, Eric Selemani, noted in his goodwill message that the dialogue demonstrates a commitment to 21st century education. He disclosed that addressing modern climate, public health, and social challenges requires learners equipped to evaluate evidence, think creatively, and formulate practical solutions across diverse professional fields.
