Academic staff at Lagos State University (LASU) have completed a three day entrepreneurship training programme designed to strengthen how the subject is taught across the Institution. The programme, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and organised in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC), ran from July 27 to 29 at the Senate Chamber of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building on the Main Campus in Ojo, and centred on the effectuation approach to entrepreneurship education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, described the programme as a timely intervention aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship education in Nigerian universities. He noted that entrepreneurship extends beyond business creation, explaining that the effectuation approach gives lecturers practical methods to help students think creatively, solve problems, make informed decisions under uncertainty, and identify opportunities. Afisi added that he expected the training to improve teaching methods and better prepare graduates to create value, generate employment, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Sessions were facilitated by Dr Abubakar A. Adamu of the University of Maiduguri and Dr Bola Olufunke Jenyo of the Federal University of Health Sciences, who introduced participants to core effectuation principles, including Bird in Hand, Affordable Loss, Lemonade, Patchwork Quilt and Pilot in the Plane. Participants engaged in practical exercises, case studies, quizzes and interactive discussions intended to deepen their grasp of entrepreneurship teaching and encourage its application in the classroom.

At the close of the programme, Dr Adamu urged participants to embrace the entrepreneurial principles in both their teaching and professional lives, stressing that entrepreneurship education should remain practical and action oriented. Representing the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Dr Samuel Asesanya commended participants for their commitment throughout the training and expressed optimism that the programme would further strengthen entrepreneurship education at LASU.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Professor Uche Ebele of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) appreciated TETFund, the National Universities Commission, and LASU for organising the training, noting that the knowledge gained would enhance entrepreneurship teaching and practice across the Institution.
