The Students' Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has issued a safety advisory to students ahead of Oro traditional rites scheduled to be held in the Isolu community on Thursday, 6th August 2026.

In a statement, the SUG urged FUNAABites, particularly those residing within and around Isolu, to make necessary preparations ahead of time and avoid unnecessary movement during the exercise. Students were strongly advised to remain indoors from 9:00pm on Thursday and avoid moving around the affected areas until it is confirmed safe to do so.

The Union further encouraged students to remain vigilant, avoid walking alone at night, and prioritise their personal safety throughout the period. It appealed to students to share the advisory widely, especially with those living within the affected community, describing their safety as a priority.

Oro is a traditional Yoruba rite observed periodically across communities in southwestern Nigeria, typically involving restrictions on movement, particularly at night, while ceremonies are conducted. The rites are usually announced in advance by community authorities to allow residents and visitors to adjust their movements accordingly.

Similar advisories have been issued at other Nigerian tertiary institutions situated near communities that observe the rites. Lagos State University (LASU) management, for instance, previously notified staff and students to restrict movement within the Iba community during Oro festival periods, following formal communication from the local monarch and community elders.

FUNAAB sits close to several communities, including Isolu, Alabata, Camp and Oluwo, that host a significant population of students living off campus. The University's Student Affairs Division, which operates under the Office of the Vice Chancellor, oversees welfare and safety matters affecting the student body alongside the SUG.

Students within the affected areas have been advised to stay alert to further updates from the Union as the rites proceed, with normal movement expected to resume once the exercise is confirmed to have ended.
