Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has cautioned content creators operating social media pages and platforms bearing the Institution's name against publishing unverified information capable of misleading the public, following claims about senior academics being promoted to Professor.
The University's current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa, took office as the 12th substantive Vice Chancellor of the Institution on 18 August 2025. It was under his leadership that the management issued the caution on Monday, disclosing that it had come to its attention that some platforms had recently announced the promotion of certain senior academics to the rank of Professor even though the process had not been concluded.
According to the statement, the recommendations of the Appointments and Promotions Committee are yet to be forwarded to external assessors at this stage. It stated that a promotion to the rank of Professor only becomes official after the external assessment process is completed and the recommendation is approved by the University Council.
BUK's last confirmed mass professorial exercise came in August 2024, when the Senate approved the promotion of 45 academics to the rank of Professor and another 45 to Associate Professor, a decision that was formally communicated through the University's official bulletin rather than through unverified social media pages, the kind of channel now at the centre of the fresh warning.
The management therefore advised content creators to refrain from publishing unconfirmed information and to verify all University related news through BUK's official communication channels, including its verified social media platforms, official website, and the University Bulletin.
It warned that the Institution would not hesitate to take appropriate action against any individual or platform that continued to disseminate false or misleading information capable of damaging the reputation of the Institution or misleading members of the public.
