North Eastern University, Gombe, has announced a 50% Founder's Scholarship for prospective students seeking admission into six science based degree programmes, positioning the initiative as a response to growing manpower demands in Nigeria's oil and gas sector.

The Pro Chancellor and Founder, Dr Sani Jauro, disclosed this during the 2026 graduation ceremony of Pen Resource Academy in Gombe, urging graduating students and other prospective candidates to take advantage of the opportunity.

The scholarship covers B.Sc. Petroleum Chemistry, B.Sc. Environmental Management and Toxicology, B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, B.Sc. Microbiology, B.Sc. Biotechnology and B.Sc. Urban and Regional Planning.

Jauro said the initiative was introduced in direct response to opportunities created by the Kolmani oil exploration project in Gombe and Bauchi states, and the increasing demand for qualified professionals across science and energy related fields.

"The 50% Founder's Scholarship is expected to ease the financial burden on students and parents while encouraging more young Nigerians to pursue careers in science and technology," he stated.

He added that the university was working towards establishing an Oil and Gas Competency Development Centre that would collaborate with internationally recognised certification bodies to provide specialised training and globally recognised certifications for both students and working professionals.

Jauro said the broader goal of the scholarship and the new programmes was to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills and professional competence required to contribute meaningfully to national economic development.

He noted that the initiative also reflected the university's commitment to expanding access to quality higher education and developing the skilled workforce needed to drive growth across Nigeria's emerging industrial sectors.
